The Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (SAWMPO) concluded a public engagement effort to learn about residents’ transportation needs and priorities in the region. The MPO held seven meetings with the public and transportation stakeholders, and also conducted a survey that received over 200 responses. The input will inform the SAWMPO’s 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), which prioritizes transportation projects for funding over the next 25-years.

Input prioritized improving pedestrian infrastructure, enhancing transit service, and continuing to address I-81 concerns. There was also support for improved road safety measures and the maintenance of existing roads.

The MPO promoted the survey with a drawing for two gift cards on December 16. One gift card recipient, Staunton resident Linda Lou Dixey Diehl, noted, “I love that we have bike lanes in some areas, but know we could do more to improve transportation in our region. Making our sidewalks more handicap-accessible would be a great place to start. Interstate 81 also needs improvements and the addition of lanes to better accommodate traffic.”
