The Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (SAWMPO) is conducted a study to evaluate mid-term solutions to periodic congestion, and long-term corridor needs and intersection configurations to accommodate future growth along Weyers Cave Road (VA 256) between U.S. 11 and Triangle Drive near I-81 Exit 235. Concepts of the potential improvements are available for review: SAWMPO I-81 Exit 235 Study
An online public survey that included the draft improvements was conducted from December 3 to 23, 2021, and received 447 responses. There was also an informational open house held at Blue Ridge Community College on March 7 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. to provide the public an in-person opportunity to review the potential improvements, provide input through written and oral comments, and discuss the Study with staff from the SAWMPO, VDOT, and the consultant Michael Baker. Input from the survey and open house was included in the final report, and summarized to local government stakeholders in March 2022.
The Study began in March 2021, and the Study Team included Michael Baker and representatives from the MPO, Augusta County, VDOT, BRITE, Blue Ridge Community College, and the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport.
